In this post, we will talk about how to adapt to the climate crisis. By adapt, I mean how to overcome the outcomes of climate change and making it so that they don’t stop you from doing things you would do if climate change wasn’t so bad. This will mainly be helpful for those who don’t live in countries like the United States where it is very easy to obtain things.
First, let’s talk about dealing with water. Climate change will lead to droughts, which will make it difficult to obtain water in some parts of the world. If you are in an area that is vulnerable to this, try stocking up on water before you need it. If you can’t stock up on water, you could also collect rainwater or find a body of water and purify the water, but make sure it is legal in your area before doing either of these.
Next, let’s talk about food. Droughts can cause crop failure, causing less food distribution, making it harder to obtain food due to a shortage and/or high pricing. The workaround is to grow food that is resistant to droughts like grapes or persimmons. This is helpful both due to the food going directly to you (which saves a ton of money) and much easier to obtain if you grow it properly.
Next, let’s talk about infrastructure. Climate change can affect the infrastructure in many ways due to events like flooding, extreme heat, and heavy downpours. There are many things to do to combat these. For flooding, your best bet is to live at a higher elevation. For extreme heat, you can do things like keep air conditioning going throughout your house, cover all windows with curtains and cardboard to prevent sunlight from entering your house (sounds weird, but cardboard helps a lot), keep your doors shut to prevent heat from entering, and have a fan on. For heavy downpours, you can install a sump pump to prevent damage from water that enters your basement, check that your roof doesn’t have any issues (if you don’t have time to fix it, you can put a tarp over the damaged part as a temporary solution), and keep your gutters clean.
Lastly, stock up on things before climate change gets very bad. For example, you should get seeds and already start growing food before you need it to be done. Or, as stated before, think about getting jugs of water to use. You could also get canned food. There are other things, but these are just a few examples.
As you have learned, adapting to climate change can be difficult, but with enough effort, you should be able to have the upper hand in terms of how easy life is compared to other people who haven’t prepared for the climate crisis.
